Reason Roku is Removing Private Channels

The reason Roku is banning private channels is obvious, it is facing financial decline. Roku faced a sale ban in Mexico in June 2017, due to privacy allegation. A suit was filed by Cablevision, a Mexican cable provider. It demanded the court order because they claimed hackers were using Roku devices to offer illegal content. Furthermore, A Cablevisión spokeswoman told Reuters. “We would also like Roku Inc to better supervise the use of its software so that it’s not used inappropriately.” This incident forced Roku to take action against all such private channels. It banned XTV now Roku private channel Pear banned.

What is Meant by Roku Private Channels?

The private channels of Roku are not available on public Roku store that most people access. If you attempt to add any of these Roku private channels you may see this message:

“THIS IS A NON-CERTIFIED CHANNEL. Roku requires all channels to abide by Roku’s terms and conditions and to distribute only legal content. Roku does not test or review non-certified channels. By continuing, you acknowledge you are accessing a non-certified channel that may include content that is offensive or inappropriate for some audiences. Moreover, if Roku determines that this channel violates copyright, contains illegal content, or otherwise violates Roku’s terms and conditions, then ROKU MAY REMOVE THIS CHANNEL WITHOUT PRIOR NOTICE.”

The private channel feature was introduced by Roku in early times to let the channel developers test their channels before officially launching it to the public.

Future of Roku Private Channels

It seems that Roku is not going to stop this mission of banning the illegal private channels which let users stream pirated content. It is not only damaging Roku’s image as a clean content provider but also hitting its financials. However, it is not possible for Roku to ban all the private channels at once. It has to do some serious homework to let it happen. Roku had also required channel developers to use a verified email address, link at least one Roku device, and even register a payment method in their Roku account.

Final Words- Roku Private Channel Pear Banned: Roku has Now Banned Pear As Well After Removing XTV

Consequently, I can see that Roku will ultimately remove all the private channels promoting pirated content. However, as mentioned above you can still be able to access such channels by using a Roku VPN from anywhere in the world.
