What Happens When You Watch BBC iPlayer Abroad?

Streaming channels work by checking your IP address once you try to stream their content. If you don’t hold a valid IP, you’ll be blocked almost instantly. Same goes to BBC iPlayer. The channel only allows access to those who live in the United Kingdom. Anyone living abroad will get this geo-error message upon viewing a video: “BBC iPlayer only works in the UK. Sorry, it’s due to rights issues.”

BBC iPlayer Error

Well, there you have it. You won’t be able to stream BBC iPlayer while overseas unless you find a tool that can work around the issue. Luckily, there exists such an internet tool – a VPN.

How to Watch IAAF World Cross Country Championships 2019 with a VPN

Before I invested in a VPN back then, I had to make sure that I’m doing the right thing. Let me tell you more about what a Virtual Private Network is. It’s an internet tool that can spoof your virtual location to a different country. This is done by connecting to a server in a selected country. Once you do that, all your internet traffic will be redirected through that server.

Hence, you’ll appear as if you’re browsing from that region. Nothing in your traffic will lead to where you physically are. even your IP address has been altered. When I figured out how this one worked, I used to access BBC iPlayer without having to see that frustrating error message again.

Here is how I did it so you can learn:

  • As soon as I got the message, I did some research and found about VPNs.
  • Evaluated a lot of them but settled for NordVPN in the end.
  • Signed up with the provider and downloaded their client straight from the website.
  • You can find applications on in the App Stores as well, but their website was convenient at the time.
  • After installing the app, I went over to their server list. They have dozens of servers in the UK.
  • I selected one and connected directly.
  • Once the connected button lit up, I launched the BBC iPlayer again.
  • Finally, I watched the 2017 World Cross Country Championships live.
  • Now, you, me, and everyone who reads this guide can watch the 2019 tournament.

NordVPN has solved a lot of my internet problems ever since I got it on my device. From bypassing regional restrictions to protecting what I do online, this VPN has it all. If you want to know more, check out the best VPNs for BBC iPlayer in the list below.
